Volunteer Team Coach Overview

Recruiting, training and retaining volunteer team coaches for the 100s of recreational teams we field each year ensures that all children in our community can play soccer, regardless of their economic situation.

We Provide Club Support for Busy Coaches

To ease the time commitment of our volunteer coaches, we provide a variety of support tools to help you come up to speed quickly and continue learning at their own pace. These include:

  • Flexible practice days to meet your work schedule
  • Access to online and in-person coaching education courses.
  • Online practice plan library
  • Program Director support
  • Director of Coaching support

Even if you've never coached soccer before, you will be surprised at how easy and rewarding it can be with the support resources we provide.

Who can be a coach?

Most of our recreational coaches are parents of players. Anyone who loves children and wants to make a positive difference in the community is encouraged to become a coach. We also welcome former players, current high school or college-level players, and extended family members as coaches!

Can I coach if...I never played soccer?

It is helpful to have a background as a player, but there are many ways to be a successful coach if you haven't played the game yourself, especially at the recreational level. Often, coaching requires little more than facilitation, setting up activities from our online library of lesson plans that allow players to play, experiment, and learn simply by playing.

What is involved?

We ask our coaches to complete an online introductory coaching course that takes about two hours to complete and to attend a pre-season coaches meeting. Coaches will lead two practices each week, and to coach one game each Saturday during the season. We encourage coaches to have an assistant coach to help them work around any work or family-related schedule conflicts. All coaches are required to pass a criminal background check.

Benefits of coaching
By coaching, you get to spend more quality time with your child and your child's friends and you will learn more about the game. As you gain experience coaching, you will also be improving your own leadership skills, communication skills, and organizational skills. Just as they do for our players, these skills will carry over from the soccer field to your personal and professional life in a very positive way.
