Children who are even a few months older can be noticeably more physically, emotionally, and socially mature. This is known as the relative age effect, and it’s why we encourage players to stay in their proper age group. Playing up for social reasons—such as being with friends—can place a child at a disadvantage and may limit their confidence, development, and enjoyment of the game.
